Townsville a winner

Townsville will be a winner under the proposed Defence project for the city worth $55 million, North Queensland based Senator Ian Macdonald said today.

Senator Macdonald said the proposal was expected to generate around 50 full time jobs in the city over the next three years.

Defence is proposing to provide new and refurbished facilities at RAAF Base Townsville to support the introduction of the new CH-47F Chinook helicopters for the Army, Senator Macdonald said.

These state-of-the-art helicopters will be used by the Armys 5th Aviation Regiment, as will the new facilities.

This is wonderful news for Townsville and it will provide a real boost for the local economy.

He said that the project would provide new and upgraded working accommodation, new maintenance hangars, storage and workshop facilities and a simulator building.

I understand the Parliamentary Committee on Public Works will visit RAAF Base Townsville in May to inspect the facilities prior to approving the expenditure, Senator Macdonald said.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, construction is expected to begin later this year with completion by mid 2017.
