I am delighted to learn of the appointment of Mick Reilly to the position of the dedicated Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative Business and Community Liaison.
I have known Mick for many years and know him to be a very capable, enthusiastic and dedicated person, who will bring understanding, expertise and sensitivity to the job.
The job of the Business and Community Liaison officer is important as it will lead the engagement process, keeping both community leaders and local elected representatives informed.
He will work with the communities in Townsville, Charters Towers, Rockhampton and Livingstone Shires to ensure these areas are able to maximise the opportunities that will flow from the military training initiative.
The Singapore investment in North Queensland Defence Bases in Townsville and Shoalwater Bay will create construction jobs and provisioning opportunities, and tourism in the longer term. It will also complement Townsville’s existing relationship with Singapore through James Cook University, and lead to enhanced cooperation in defence science and technology.
I am hopeful that many local contractors will be involved in the work.
