I welcome action by the Government to set up a single regulatory authority for cultivation of medicinal cannabis.
I am pleased the Government has taken a leadership role in the whole issue of medicinal cannabis.
I chair the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legal Committee which conducted an inquiry into Senator Di Natale’s Bill on the same subject. After an intensive and exhaustive inquiry and public hearings, the Committee approved in-principal the legislated and controlled use of medicinal cannabis, but indicated some concerns as to technicalities in the Private Members Bill.
I am pleased that in taking over leadership of the issue, these technical glitches will now be addressed and all States and Territories will co-operate with the Federal Government in bringing about a regime that allows for the beneficial aspects of medicinal cannabis to be available to patients in Australia.
I am particularly pleased that at a State LNP Conference almost two years ago, the Party gave its approval for the regulated use of medicinal cannabis, and it is pleasing to note that this position of the LNP will be implemented into federal law.
