I am honoured and humbled to have been elected to the Australian Senate for the sixth time making me not only the longest serving Senator but now also the longest serving federal parliamentarian.
I thank the people of Queensland particularly in the North for their confidence in returning me again.
I am disappointed that for the first time in the past 30 years I am now the only senator from North Queensland and that always makes the job of promoting the North just that little bit harder.
I am also saddened that my colleague Joanna Lindgren was not returned as I know she had so much to offer.
My oft-publicly stated prediction that a Double Dissolution election would 'end in tears' for the Government has, regrettably, been proven to be accurate.
I look forward to working with all Queenslanders for their betterment and support in the next term of Parliament.
And I will continue to ensure the Northern Development Whitepaper is implemented in its entirety.
