Students in Cairns will have the opportunity to learn useful vocational skills in the newly opened Cairns Catholic Vocational Trade Training Centre.
The centre, which was built with over $9.8 million in funding from the Australian Government, will be officially opened tomorrow June 11, 2015 by Senator the Hon Ian Macdonald on behalf of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Scott Ryan.
The Cairns Catholic Vocational Trade Training Centre is located across six sites in Woree, Cairns, Herberton, Mareeba and Innisfail. It will allow secondary school students to earn qualifications in engineering, construction and hospitality and incorporates three commercial kitchens, three teaching dining areas, four multi-purpose workshops, three covered outdoor construction areas, two theory classrooms, store rooms, and student amenities.
“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring vocational training meets the needs of industry and employers, and to providing students with relevant training,” Senator Ryan said.
Senator Macdonald welcomed the Australian Government’s commitment to training young people in north Queensland.
“The new facilities at Cairns Catholic Vocational Trade Training Centre will give students the best chance to learn workplace skills,” Senator Macdonald said
“Skills training at secondary school provides a basis for students to pursue further training after school or to enter the workplace”
“For many students, learning a trade will be the key to a job in a wide range of industries, from tourism to construction.
“I congratulate the entire school communities for their foresight and cooperation to get this centre up and running,” Senator Macdonald said.
The opening ceremony for the Trade Training Centre will take place at St Mary's Catholic College, 53 Anderson Road, Woree on Thursday, 11 June 2015 from 12.00 pm.
