Northern-based LNP Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed the introduction of landmark legislation in the House of Representatives today that will pave the way to the safe, legal and reliable supply of medicinal cannabis.
Senator Macdonald, who has taken a specific interest in the issue since chairing an inquiry into the original proposal for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis, said he was delighted the legislation had reached Parliament
“That inquiry fully investigated all aspects and it was as a result of the evidence gained from that inquiry that the Government has fast-tracked this legislation,” Senator Macdonald said.
The legislation provides for a single regulatory authority for cultivation of medicinal cannabis, ensuring a safe and legal supply for patients.
“This is great news for Queensland families who I know access the drug sometimes by difficult means.
“There is still a fair way to go before it’s available, but the process has started.
“I’ve already been approached by a number of North Queenslanders interested in pursuing business opportunities in the North given the favourable climatic conditions and easy access to ports which could be used for product export.
“It has been a long journey to get where we are today, and I thank my parliamentary colleagues from all sides of politics who have worked together to bring this legislation to fruition.
“It’s a great win for everyone.”
