The north’s only Senator, Ian Macdonald, has welcomed additional funding for local advocacy and welfare services for current and returned servicemen and women and their families.
Senator Macdonald said $177,000 through the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program would be shared between five ex-service organisations to continue providing help and advice to the veteran community.
The successful recipients include:
Vietnam Veterans Federation Townsville ($13,464.20)
Townsville RSL Sub-branch ($49,204.68)
Vietnam Veterans Association Townsville ($10, 406.18)
TP Disabled Ex-Servicepersons Association Townsville ($13, 544.15)
Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans Association ($90,366.87).
“With its proud tradition as a garrison city, it is vitally important that ex-service organisations are well-funded across Townsville to continue to ensure they can offer the necessary help and support to our serving and returned defence personnel, and their families,” Senator Macdonald said.
“I am pleased the Turnbull Government is committed to investing in the health and well-being of our extended defence family here in the north, by providing essential funding to ensure support services are well maintained.”
Senator Macdonald said the money will help fund salaries for trained advocates and pension staff, essential office supplies, computer equipment, internet access and other administrative services.
