Northern based Senator Ian Macdonald has today welcomed the appointment of Richmond Shire Mayor Cr John Wharton AM as the interim chair of the Northern Australia Co-operative Research Centre (CRC).
Senator Macdonald, who is Chair of the Northern Australia White Paper Implementation Oversight Committee said Cr Wharton is an excellent choice for the role.
“Cr Wharton is a long-serving regional mayor who is well attuned to all aspects of life and growth in North Australia,” Senator Macdonald said.
Senator Macdonald said the role of the interim chair will be to establish the CRC’s board and start the preliminary process of setting up the Centre, which will include leading northern universities, James Cook University and Charles Darwin University.
The Government has allocated $75million in non-competitive funding for the CRC, which will bring together academics, scientists and industry experts to build knowledge and capability across the north.
“This is another step forward in the implementation of the Government’s Northern Australia White Paper.”
