Northern-based Senator Ian Macdonald has congratulated Mareeba Shire Council for their proactive management of a colony of flying foxes that threatened to disrupt a popular recreational area in the town.
Senator Macdonald praised Mayor Tom Gilmore and his councillors for getting in early before the colony settled permanently in the area.
“We’ve seen plenty of examples in the past where Councils in other areas of the state have put the issue of the control of flying fox colonies into the too-hard basket, which not only results in public safety concerns, but also a great deal of community angst,” Senator Macdonald said.
“I applaud Mareeba Shire for their swift and decisive action.”
“The ratepayers and visitors to the area are the clear winners in this situation, which could very easily have escalated into a much more undesirable outcome.”
