Senator Macdonald welcomes Operation Sovereign Borders

Northern Australia is on the front line of what has become a national emergency under a chaotic Labor government the extraordinary influx of asylum seekers and the heinous trade in human lives by the people smugglers.

Senator Ian Macdonald, Opposition spokesman for Northern and Remote Australia, today welcomed the announcement of the Coalitions policy to solve the problem, Operation Sovereign Borders.

Since Kevin Rudd got rid of the Coalitions border protection policies in 2008 more than 1,000 people have died at sea, more than 48,000 people have arrived and more than $10 billion dollars has been spent in border protection blowouts, Senator Macdonald said.

The Labor governments under both Mr Rudd and Ms Gillard have failed to implement any effective deterrent and the ill-thought-out PNG solution is another failure in the making.

The problem requires a disciplined and carefully planned approach something this shambolic government does not seem capable of.

The Coalitions policy, Operation Sovereign Borders, will streamline decision making on strengthening our borders into a single command structure with participation from all related agencies.

It is vital for the continuing viability of Northern Australia that our borders are re-established, Senator Macdonald said.

If the Coalition is elected, this policy will be implemented in the first 100 days.

It wont be easy, but the Coalition is determined to fix what the Labor governments have broken our borders.
