APPLICATIONS are now open for Round Three of the Coalition Government’s $33.7 million Remote Airstrip Upgrade Programme.
Northern based Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed the opening of Round Three as a renewed opportunity for northern communities to enhance their aviation infrastructure.
“The Coalition Government’s commitment to regional communities is once again on display,” Senator Macdonald said.
Senator Macdonald, who is also Chair of the Northern Whitepaper Implementation Oversight Committee said that the funding recognises the challenges faced by some Northern communities in accessing services.
“Many smaller communities are absolutely reliant on air links, particularly during the wet season.
“As an adjunct to the Northern development strategy, upgrading aviation facilities can improve community amenity and emergency services access, improve transport links for business, and generally increase economic participation for regional communities.“
Senator Macdonald said that Round Three will be open for 7 weeks to provide communities with the opportunity to develop strong proposals.
Applications will be assessed on their ability to improve access and safety at remote airstrips to the benefit of local communities.
“I am urging community groups, Indigenous organisations and local governments in the Kennedy electorate and across Northern Australia to make an application for funding to upgrade their aviation facilities,” the Senator said.
Applications will close on 31 August 2015 and more information, including the application form and guidelines, can be found on the Department’s website at:
