Northern-based LNP Senator Ian Macdonald, who chairs the Northern Development White Paper Implementation Oversight Committee, today launched a First Anniversary Update of the implementation of the White Paper.
The Our North, Our Future: White Paper for Developing Northern Australia was launched one year ago and so far 73 out of 111 short-term commitments have been completed or are well under way, Senator Macdonald said.
“Not only have key funding commitments like the low interest infrastructure loans program NAIF and the Priority Roads program been activated, but we have also made great strides in making revisions to policy settings – for example expansion of the Seasonal Workers Programme - that will promote development in the north,” Senator Macdonald said.
Progress has been made in a number of areas including:
- implementation of the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund with millions of dollars being invested in feasibility studies across the north;
- the establishment of the Australian Institute of Tropical health and medicine;
- the creation of the Cooperative Research Centre for Northern Australia;
- the finalisation of CSIRO studies for the enhancement of the Beef Roads network across the north.
Senator Macdonald said that his committee’s role was to ensure that all of the ambitious programs announced in the White Paper and the budgeted funding allocated for them, were actually implemented at the earliest possible time.
“I am very pleased that the Government has so enthusiastically implemented most of the promises made in a massive boost for the development of Northern Australia.
“A re-elected Turnbull Government will continue full steam ahead on the White Paper implementation and Coalition MP’s and Senators from the North will continue to ensure that action proceeds in a timely fashion.”
