I despair at the inaccurate commentary about the closure of Manus Island.
I urge everyone seriously interested in the issue to read the Hansard report of last week’s Senate Estimates inquiry of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
As Chairman of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee conducting that inquiry, I heard Departmental officials give clear and unambiguous evidence about alternative arrangements for those illegal maritime arrivals located in facility which the PNG Supreme Court determined had to be closed.
The Closure Order was warmly welcomed in Australia by the Greens and other politicians who are now complaining.
Every facility has been provided by the PNG and Australian Government to relocate people who were residents at the time of the closure.
It is time that the facts became known and they are there for everyone to see in the Senate Hansard of last Monday 23 October, 2017.
