Macdonald welcomes flights

North-Queensland-based LNP Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed Air Norths announcement of increases to its Townsville-Darwin flight schedule.

The original twice weekly service of two years ago will soon operate five times a week.

This is great news for the North of Australia, he said.

For so many years we have needed a direct air link between Townsville and Darwin both crucial population centres in Northern Australia.

Senator Macdonald has long been an advocate for augmenting air services in the north, and was privileged to be on Air Norths first flight from Townsville to Darwin direct.

By making places like Darwin and Townsville more accessible you encourage tourism and you encourage industry - you grow the local economy and the local community, he said.

For years Ive been calling on the major airlines to introduce more direct services, and for years Ive been told that it just wasnt sustainable that there wasnt the market for it.

But Air North has proven that there is a high demand for these services and I congratulate them for their initiative and courage.

I hope that as the North of Australia continues to prosper, and that more and more private-sector operators like Air North will realise the potential.
