Macdonald welcome launch of $760m jobs program

North Queensland businesses are being given the opportunity to help young people into a job, while also growing their business, following today’s launch of the Federal Government’s $760 million Youth Jobs PaTH program.

Northern-based Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed the commencement of the program as more good news for businesses in the north, following the introduction last week of the Federal government’s tax cuts for small businesses.

“The PaTH program is all about stimulating the economy, generating new employment, and giving businesses the ability to grow.

“But it’s also about giving young people in the north an opportunity to learn new skills, and become truly job-ready, making them much more attractive to potential employers.

“The Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH program will assist 120 000 young Australians get the skills and experience they need to get a foot in the door and get a job,” said the Senator.

Northern businesses that take on an intern under the Youth Jobs PaTH program will receive an upfront payment of $1,000, and young people will receive an incentive payment of $200 per fortnight on top of their income support payment.

“The best way to create more jobs in the north is to build a strong economy in which employers can be more productive and more competitive.

The PaTH program is funded through the Federal Government’s $855 million Youth Employment Package, announced in the 2015-16 Budget. The program includes:

  • Initial government funded training to get young Australians job-ready;
  • Internships lasting 4 – 12 weeks, giving young job-seekers valuable experience - interns will receive up to $200 per fortnight in addition to their welfare payment, and participating local businesses receive upfront payments of $1,000 for taking on an intern; and
  • If businesses offer their intern ongoing employment, they are eligible for a wage subsidy of up to $10,000.

“I encourage young jobseekers in the north, as well as businesses in the north, to take advantage of this great opportunity,” said Senator Macdonald.
