Mt Isa youth will receive a leg-up in their quest to find work thanks to a national initiative designed to help young people into sustainable employment.
Northern based LNP Senator Ian Macdonald said Headspace Mt Isa is one of 20 organisations across the country to be selected to deliver the new Empowering YOUth Initiative, which offers new and innovative ways to help young people become job ready.
“This is wonderful news for regional communities like Mt Isa, which under the previous Labor Government, often fell off the radar when comes to providing opportunities for young people to access job support services,” Senator Macdonald said.
Senator Macdonald said Headstart was selected through a highly competitive grant process to deliver the programme, having identified the right mix of experience and innovative thinking to help engage young people and help them break through obstacles limiting their job prospects.
“The Government has identified that early intervention can make all the difference when it comes to helping young people transition into long term employment, and this is another example of a range of targeted measures being rolled out through the $331million Youth Employment Strategy.”
The Headspace programme will run up to two years, and will target vulnerable young people aged 15-24. Innovative approaches can include:
- Preventing young people from becoming long-term unemployed through early intervention
- Addressing barriers preventing young people from getting a job and/or
- Once they find a job, helping young people to sustain employment.
