The cornerstone of the Coalition Government’s Northern Australia policy has passed a critical milestone today, with the legislation to fund $5billion in cheap infrastructure loans passed by the House of Representatives.
“The next crucial step is to get it introduced and adopted by the Senate.”
“Because of Labor Party support I don’t anticipate any opposition in the Senate, although I understand the Greens will be moving some amendments to exclude certain categories of projects from accessing loan funds.
“It then becomes a procedural question of getting the Bill through the Senate in the time the Senate will sit before the July 2 election.
“I am hopeful this will happen but it will require skilful shepherding through the Senate process.”
If passed, the first loans through the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund will be available from 1 July, 2016.
