Northern-based Queensland Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed the announcement of $5 million Federal Government funding for Stage 2 of the Mareeba Shire Airport upgrade project.
The funding has been provided as a grant under the second round of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).
“This is a wonderful project and I am delighted that the BBRF has been able to provide this level of assistance to the Airport Upgrade.
“Mayor Tom Gilmore and his team have worked tirelessly for years towards this outcome.”
“I was pleased to be able to facilitate a visit to the project by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack in May this year to have the Mayor explain the importance of the proposal.
Stage two of the airport upgrade will focus on improvements to the runway and taxiways, which will complement the hangar and other upgrades that are already underway.
“These upgrades will create opportunities for more general aviation traffic at Mareeba, and even for commercial passenger flights directly onto the Atherton Tablelands.
“The Building Better Regions Fund is just one of the many ways that the Turnbull Coalition Government is showing its commitment to Regional Queensland and Northern Australia.
A further $200million in Building Better Regions Fund funding was provided in the 2018-19 Federal Budget. For more information visit:
