Beames Brook Bridge Complete

The new Beames Brook Bridge on Wills Developmental Road south of Burketown, Queensland is complete and open to traffic.

Senator for Queensland Ian Macdonald said the new bridge would improve safety and better connect regional Gulf communities.

“This project is part of a wider strategy to improve the reliability and accessibility of the Northern Australian road network,” Senator Macdonald said.

“The new bridge will mean safer access for communities as well as increased efficiency and safety for freight moving through the area, which will benefit key regional industries.”

Senator Macdonald said the new bridge was a win for Gulf communities who rely heavily on road travel for key services, freight and a motorist-driven tourism economy.

“Wills Developmental Road is a major regional link, providing access to the Gulf communities of Burketown and Doomadgee, as well as tourists, freight and industry,” Senator Macdonald said.

“Since the start of works in August, Transport and Main Roads has worked closely with the Gangalidda and Garawa people to maintain the cultural significance of the bridge’s unique location.

“The new bridge is just one example of the productivity improvements being delivered through the Bridges Renewal Program and the Australian Government's infrastructure investment more broadly.

“It is great to see Queenslanders benefiting from such projects with an average of 19 jobs supported during the construction of Beames Brook Bridge.

LNP Candidate for Kennedy Frank Beveridge said the new bridge was a welcome addition to the community.

“I am pleased to see the Federal Government connecting regional communities through construction of the bridge,” Mr Beveridge said.

“Cattle and tourism are prominent industries in this part of Queensland so it’s important that we keep building infrastructure that allows them to travel on the roads safely.”
