Northern based Government Senator Ian Macdonald has welcomed news of disaster assistance for the far northern and north-west shires of Burke, Carpentaria, Doomadgee and Mornington following a flooding event last month.
Senator Macdonald said the funding, provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), will provide financial assistance to those local government areas to help with recovery costs following the Gulf Tropical Low which affected the region between 15-24 February.
“This funding is of critical importance in supporting local governments with the cost of essential and often costly clean up works following natural disasters,” Senator Macdonald said.
“Without this financial assistance, many of these communities, particularly in more regional and remote areas would not only be forced to suffer lengthy delays to begin the process of repair and restoration, but ratepayers would also be forced to foot the bill.
